SHAKESPEARE, William (1564-1616). Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies published according to the true original copies. The third impression. And unto this impression is added seven playes, never before printed in folio. London: for P[hilip] C[hetwind], 1664.

2° (334 x 220mm). Double column within typographical rule. Woodcut device of eagle and serpents on title, woodcut headpiece and opening initial to each play, woodcut tailpieces. (Lacking the first leaf with portrait and verses 'To the reader,' title cut down and mounted without loss of text, some creasing of earlier leaves, occasional small soil marks and isolated brown spots, 3F3 and 3M5 holed with loss to several lines recto and verso, smaller rust holes affecting a few letters, T1 torn at upper outer corner with some loss to rule and partial loss of page numeral, R1 with clean tear into text, 3F6 with repaired paper fault causing slight loss, other paper faults to 2F5 and 2I1, 4C1 with crease affecting alignment of several lines, 4E4 with old paper repair on blank verso, staining of text on N3 and R4, P5-Q2 with worm track at margin, I2 and Z2 torn and 4C3-4 frayed at margin, some marginal browning and occasional soiling, final leaf soiled on verso.) 18th-century panelled calf tooled in blind (rebacked and recornered, joints and corners rubbed, spine torn at head). Provenance: Sir John Fowler or Ffoules (contemporary signature in Latin on title and in English on verso of final leaf); Ralph Eddley (early signature on Q3); Thomas Goodall (18th-century signature in Latin, partly on title and partly on the mount); Ferguson of Raith (19th-century armorial bookplate).

THE THIRD FOLIO. In this second issue, the portrait was removed from the title to make room for the list of additional plays, and placed above Jonson's verses on the opposite leaf, which is the one leaf lacking in this copy. Of the seven additional plays, all but Pericles have proved to be spurious. Nevertheless, all of them had appeared in Shakespeare's lifetime with his name or initials attached, and because of the inclusion of Pericles this can be regarded as the first complete edition. The printer of the additions has been identified from the device and ornaments as Roger Daniel. Daniel was also one of three printers responsible for the main text, the two others being Alice Warren and 'perhaps' John Hayes. Milton's 'Epitaph' had first appeared in the Second Folio, published by Robert Allot in 1632. Philip Chetwind, the publisher of the Third Folio, married Robert Allot's widow, Mary, recovering the Allot copyrights which she had been forced to give up on his death. Bartlett 122; Gregg III, p. 1118; Jaggard p. 496; Pforzheimer 909; Wing S-2914.
