FIRST EDITION of this important West Indies history. Published at a critical time for colonial interests in the area, the work describes much of the Caribbean region with accompanying charts by Jefferys. At the time, hostilities between Britain, France and Spain had ceased, with Britain temporarily in possession of most of the French islands. In spite of vigorous lobbying from West Indian planters, the major islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique were returned to France as part of the trade-off by which France agreed to relinquish Canada.
