A SENTOKU NARA TSUBA AND TEN OTHERS
Momoyama/Edo period (16th/19th century)
The first of mokko-shape, finished in black lacquer and gilt, with a bird on a flowering tree, inlaid with enamels, 8.3cm.; a rounded square sentoku Hamano school tsuba, with five chidori on the face and three on the reverse, signed Masayuki, 8.45cm.; an unsigned, rounded square Nara school tsuba, carved and inlaid in shakudo and gold with a horse beside a river under a willow tree, 7.1cm.; a thin and delicate Heianjo sukashi tsuba, the plate pierced with sedge, 7.85cm.; an oval tsuba carved and pierced with seven geese in a squall of rain, 7.6cm.; an almost circular tsuba carved with a horse swimming in a river and two others on the bank, signed Chohan Saki Tomonobu, Choshu school, 7cm.; a Heianjo Shoami tsuba pierced with a kiri-mon and other forms, 7.9cm.; a circular mokume ground tsuba, with two circular piercings, the signature removed, 6.95cm.; a small Nara school tsuba decorated with copper, gold and silver inlays and carved on the face with two bundles of brushwood, one with wild flowers tucked into it, a staff and a gourd, signed Takano Nobushige, with a kao, and inscribed: Made for Mr Iwasaki, a retainer of Mr Kojima, at Kikutani at the foot of Tekkei-san, east of Kyoto, 6.85cm.; a scalloped-cruciform tsuba with a double hole piercing, unsigned, 7.3cm.; and a tsuba, probably amateur work of late date, in the early Akasaka style, pierced with tree-like forms, 7.75cm.
