A TANAKA SCHOOL TSUBA AND EIGHT OTHERS
Edo period (18th/19th century)
An unsigned iron Tanaka school tsuba inlaid silver shakudo and gold, and carved with a large anchor amongst rocks by the seashore, chidori flying around it, 8.5cm.; a circular iron tsuba, carved and pierced with chrysanthemum plants in full bloom, signed Bushu no ju Masatatsu, 7.8cm.; a rimless Hikone-bori tsuba, carved and inlaid with a sennin in a boat descending rapids beneath a pine tree, 7.4cm.; an oval iron tsuba pierced and carved with a man hoeing under a pine tree beside a salt-burner's hut, 7.2cm.; a circular iron tsuba carved in relief with Kan'u on horseback, 7.5cm.; a mokko, tembo-style iron tsuba, boldly inlaid with a dragon, 8.4cm.; a circular iron tsuba pierced with two 'boar's eye' shaped openings, signed Tanshu no ju Sadamasa, 8cm.; an iron Nanban tsuba, the broad front and back surfaces of the rim inlaid with characters and carved and pierced with clouds, 7.4cm.; and another Nanban tsuba pierced and carved with two opposed dragons amongst scrolling clouds, 7cm.
