A CHOSHU HISATSUGU TSUBA, A TADATOKI TSUBA AND FIVE OTHERS
Edo period (18th/19th century)
A circular iron tsuba pierced and carved with thirty-two arrowflights, signed Choshu Hagi no ju Tomohisa saku, 7.7cm.; a hachi-mokko tsuba inlaid around the seppa-dai with a butterfly in shakudo and gold, the reverse with another flying away, 8.6cm.; a good Akasaka tsuba, pierced with Chinese pavilions, towers, clouds and a pine tree, signed Tadatoki, probably 8th generation or later, 7.8cm.; an Awa Shoami tsuba decorated on the face with kiku, leaves and buds, the reverse with kiri vines, the decoration and the rim in gold nunome-zogan, 8.4cm.; an oval iron tanto tsuba carved, inlaid and pierced with Narihira on horseback and four attendants on foot, pausing to admire the snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji, signed Mitsunaga with a gold kao, 6.6cm.; a circular iron tsuba, carved and pierced with a chrysathemum bloom and a leaf, signed Bushu no ju Tsunetada, 7.3cm.; and a mokko shibuichi tanto tsuba inlaid with two puppies, the reverse inlaid with dandelions [tanpopo] in two colours of gold, Mito school, 6.2cm.
