Lot Essay

The well-known design of the first inro was first used in lacquer by Hon'ami Koetsu (1558-1637) and was subsequently copied by a number of other artists working in the so-called Rinpa style who often added the signature of Koetsu's artistic successor Ogata Korin (1658-1716). See William Watson (ed.), The Great Japan Exhibition: Art of the Edo Period 1600-1868 (London, 1981), cat. no. 158.
