MÜNSTER, Sebastian (1488-1552). Cosmographiae Universalis Lib. VI. Basel: Henricus Petri, 1550.
2° (314 x 204mm). Woodcut title, half-page portrait of Mnster on verso, 14 double-page maps, 38 double-page town views and plans by Deutsch and others, 3 folding panoramas, numerous woodcut maps, plans, views and illustrations in the text, including 10 full-page maps, a few annotations to the text in a contemporary hand. (Upper margin of title shaved, lacking right section of panorama of Worms, ff.681-84 bound between ff.966 & 967, occasional browning, panoramas creased with slight losses to margins, wormholes affecting some leaves, a few minor repaired tears). 17th century calf, covers with gilt double fillet border, the spine in 7 compartments with raised bands, stamped with foliate motif (rubbed, joints cracked and restored). Provenance: the last leaf with papered over inscription, 'me libris [fx] franciscus [tardif] comparavit'; library stamp on verso of panorama of Vienna: Bibliotheque National AL[...]
THE FIRST EDITION IN LATIN TO INCLUDE LARGE PLANS OF CITIES. Mnster's great geographical compendium became one of the most influential geographical works on Europe of the period, extending to over 35 editions, most published in Basel.
