Hand-coloured engraved wall map, mounted on linen, 1390 x 1005mm, with decorative title, inset maps of the Artic Region, the lower valley of the Amazon and Orinoco rivers, South America, together with a plan of San Francisco and a view of Sutter's Saw Mill, seas decorated with ships and steamers, ornate foliate border encorporating three cartouches with views of the Patent Office, Smithsonian Institute and the U.S.Capitol, Washington, together with portraits of presidents and allegorical figures (small areas of loss and minor repairs mainly affecting border).
A FASCINATING AND HIGHLY DECORATIVE wall map showing the political configuration of North America at a crucial point in history. The American West is shown according to the Treaty of Guadeloupe Hidalgo (1848), by which California and the South West were officially ceded to the United States by Mexico, and according to the Compromise of 1850, by which Texas was reduced to its present boundaries. The map predates the Gadsden Purchase (1853) which transferred southern Arizona and New Mexico to the United States and shows the eastern Rockies and Indian Territories stretching from the Canadian borer to Texas. A fine and detailed map, it is particularly interesting for the depiction of the mid West, marking various wagon trails across Texas and the Indian Territories and includes Col. Cooke's wagon route through Sonora up into New Mexico. Not in Phillips.
