PURDY, John (1773 - 1843). A Chart of the World, on Mercator's Projection; with the Tracks of the more Distinguished Modern Navigators. Regulated throughout, according to the best Scientific Determinations. London: Richard Holmes Laurie, [1830] - 1834.

Folding wall map on 4 sheets, overall map size: 1250 x 1885mm, each sheet 665 x 960mm, dissected and backed on cloth and printed marbled paper, modern cloth box with gilt morocco label (blue crayon lines to some boundaries, light surface staining, small corner cut away from upper left corner of the South East section, affecting margin only). Provenance: mapseller's printed label, 'Davies, Glocester'.

A RARE AND EXTREMELY DETAILED MAP of the world published by Richard Holmes Laurie, a leading maker of sea charts. First published in 1830, this is the new edition, 'materially improved'. The chart is specifically designed to show the great voyages of discovery from Columbus up to the time of publication, including those of such recent explorers as Parry (1819-20), Bellingshausen (1821), Anjou (1822), Weddell (1823) and Beechey (1826). Notes on the expeditions are provided at the relevant geographical points, 'on 20th Feb 1823... Cptn Weddell reached the Latitude of 74° 151. No field Ice in sight; the weather very clear; many whales & birds innumerable'. Many notations are provided on the then little-known parts of the world, such as the American Arctic and Antarctica. At the North Slope of Alaska it is stated that the 'Coast [was] visited by Captn. Beechey, and found to be thickly inhabited, 1826.' This later edition was corrected to show the recent discoveries of Capt. John Biscoe (1831-2) and Boulton (1833) in Antarctica and is probably one of the earliest maps to show them. Not in Phillips.
