The Clyno motor car was made for a mere nine years from 1922 to 1930. Initially it was successful, its sprightly performance, light steering and utter reliability earned it a reputation rivalling the Morris Cowley. Eventually, however, the trade recession of the late twenties took its toll and Clyno's efforts to maintain their foothold in the small family car market were overwhelmed by under capitalisation and the development costs for new models. The Clyno's enduring handling qualities and reliability have nevertheless ensured that the surviving cars are appreciated by vintage car enthusiasts.

This example, with two seater open bodywork, has a roomy dickey seat capable of accommodating one large adult or two children. It is finished in burgundy with black wings, wheels, hood and upholstery. The condition is good overall, the hood and side screens being used but sound. The upholstery appears to be in good condition and each of the doors, for driver and passenger, has an attractive pocket closed by a flap embossed with a "C". There is a bulb horn, a speedometer, clock, ammeter and oil pressure gauge to the dashboard. A fire extinguisher has been fitted next to the passenger seat.

The side-valve engine, with its single carburettor, fed by gravity from a scuttle-mounted petrol tank and the magneto ignition, makes the under bonnet seem pure vintage. The thermosyphon cooling system has been enhanced with a modern electric radiator fan.

On the outside of the car, its character is highlighted by the battery mounted in the near-side running board, the Pratts Motor Spirit can and the off-side mounted spare wheel. The windscreen frame would benefit from new nickel plating - but overall this little Clyno represents a rare, original and unspoilt example of a vintage light car of great character.
