FROM THE ESTATE OF THE LATE JAMES CROCKER
1934 LAGONDA RAPIER SINGLE SEATER SPECIAL
Registration No. BPH 492
Chassis No. D10841
Engine No. UMB 2111W
Dark blue and black with black leather upholstery.
Engine: AC six cylinder, 1991cc; Gearbox: four speed manual; Brakes: mechanically operated drum brakes all round; Suspension: semi-elliptic leaf springs all round, Andre-Hartford shock absorbers, centre lock wire wheels with Dunlop racing tyres.
As happened with many motor car manufacturers, Lagonda Ltd decided in 1932 that their high quality two and three litre cars had to be supplemented with a smaller model of equal quality, but which was less expensive to buy and run during the lean years of the depression. The resultant Lagonda Rapier had Girling brakes, an ENV preselector gearbox and a robust twin overhead camshaft engine of a modest 1104cc capacity.
This single seater special, which belonged to James Crocker for many years, has a Lagonda Rapier chassis dating from July 1934 - when it had a Rapier 1104cc engine and a two seater fixed head coupe body by Abbott.
The present six cylinder, two litre AC engine was fitted many years ago and the car was rebuilt to its present single seater form in 1984. Since then, the motor car has been enthusiastically campaigned in Vintage Sports-Car Club events by James Crocker and his family.
The lightweight bodywork is well made in square tube covered in aluminium panelling, shaped and fitted to a high standard by the late Peter Hunt. The single seat is well padded for side support and is leather covered; there is a single racing screen and two rear-view mirrors. The result is a pleasing period racing car not dissimilar to an ERA in appearance.
The two litre AC engine is fitted with triple SU carburettors, a bespoke exhaust manifold, electric starter-motor (but no dynamo), coil ignition and a modern oil filter. A manual four speed gearbox with a central lever between the driver's legs is fitted.
The motor car is in very good overall condition and is offered with a trailer (please note that the trailer can be collected by prior appointment from Salisbury, Wiltshire). Its registration number of BPH 492 is recorded with the Rapier Register but the car is not equipped or taxed for road use.
