Walter P Chrysler was one of the legendary figures of the American motor industry. He took control of Maxwell in 1923 and from it created his Chrysler Corporation which, in 1928, acquired Dodge to become third only to Ford and GM in the sales league. 1928 was also the year in which a team of largely standard Chryslers ran at Le Mans and where one finished third to a Bentley and a Stutz.

Amongst the upmarket Chrysler models was the 75, which for 1929 and 1930 featured a distinctive ribbon radiator with thermostatic shutters. In 1929 the most common 75 models, the sedan and coupé, accounted for 32,000 sales but there were also some limited production models, of which the phaetons were the rarest. This is an example of the Tonneau Phaeton of which only 227 were sold. Its cowl and second windscreen have been removed to improve rear seat access, and various mechanical spares are included with the car.

The Chrysler was imported from South America in 1980, following which a protracted restoration took place. The engine and gearbox were rebuilt by Barry Simpson Engineering, the instruments reconditioned by Vintage Instruments. The upholstery (brown leather), hood and wiring were renewed and the bodywork repainted in ivory with brown wings. In all, over £15,000 was spent by the enthusiast owner. The work was photographically recorded. Since the completion of the restoration the car has seen careful use and has been continually maintained and regularly serviced.

Apart from hub caps the car is complete and ready to be used. Its Silver Dome cylinder head has been recently reconditioned and the work is still covered by the specialist's guarantee.

This is a particularly stylish example of a powerful open American car from an attractive period, which has had the benefit of an expensive professional restoration to high standards.
