1934 ROLLS-ROYCE 20/25 FOUR DOOR SPORTS SALOON
COACHWORK BY THRUPP & MABERLY
Registration No: TGB 884
Chassis No. GMD 80
Engine No. Q5D
Black over green with black wings and green leather interior.
Engine: six cylinder, overhead valve, 3669cc; Gearbox: four speed manual with synchromesh between third and fourth; Brakes: four wheel drum with mechanical servo; Suspension: semi-elliptic leaf springs. Right hand drive.
By the time the Rolls-Royce 20/25 replaced the 20hp model in 1929, the Great Depression was beginning to bite. However, it had remarkably little effect on the Rolls-Royce factory who continued to produce their motor cars for a reliable customer base - although it could be argued that some clients who may have bought Phantoms were now opting for the 20/25. The model remained in production until 1937 and, as usual, a variety of coachwork styles were available.
This 1934 model has very attractive four door, sports saloon coachwork by Thrupp and Maberly. The car was first sold to a Mrs Ross in Invernesshire on 26 September 1934 for the princely sum of £8431. The original instruction stated that the car was for use in the UK and on the Continent for both town and touring purposes.
Today the car has black and green paintwork with a fine green coachline and black interior upholstery and carpeting. The engine was fully overhauled in 1987 which included fitting new pistons, as well as regrinding the crankshaft and repairing the cylinder head. At the same time the gearbox was overhauled and the brakes also received attention.
The car carries a current MOT certificate and has a V5 registration document - so should be quite ready for use this season.
The Thrupp & Maberly coachwork is particularly attractive with sculpted waistline, and the 20/25 is very much an owner/driver model.
