1958 MESSERSCHMITT KR-201 ROADSTER
Chassis No. 66248
Red with black upholstery and snake skin trim.
Engine: Fichtel & Sachs single cylinder, 2-stroke, 191cc; Gearbox: four speed manual and electric reverse; Brakes: three-wheel cable; Suspension: rubber torsion springs with hydraulic shock absorbers.
This extremely rare sporting Messerschmitt is one of the most glamourous of all the cabin-scooters. Utilising a 191cc, Fichtel & Sachs engine, but running on a modified compression ratio of 8:1, compared to that of the hugely popular KR200 at 6.3:1, it was given a further 2hp and therefore capable of a maximum speed of 65mph. Entry was by the standard cockpit, but the bubble effect of the closed car has been removed and a simple elegance created by the new free-standing frameless windscreen, winglamps and scissor-type hood. To accompany the increased power the interior was fitted out with handsome black upholstery picked out in imitation snake skin. The front seat was adjustable and could be tipped up for convenient entry.
The KR-201 we are offering from the collection was once part of the Les Klinge Collection, a Messerschmitt exponent, and featured in the American publication, Automobile Quarterly, Vol.11, No.2.
The machine can only be described as being in excellent condition throughout, having been comprehensively and professionally restored. It has been repainted in signal red to an outstanding level, whilst the brightwork has all been re-plated, including the ultra-rare chrome sport exhaust system.
The front and rear seats and side panelling were retrimmed in black grained vinyl whilst the trim was picked out in genuine snake skin.
Hugely desirable and very driveable, this is in outstanding condition and worthy of close inspection. The roadster has a New Jersey title document.
