CRUDELI, Tommaso. In lode del Signor Carlo Broschi detto Farinello musico celebrer ode. Florence: Anton Maria Albizzini, 1734.

4° (230 x 167mm). Engraved portrait of Carlo Broschi by Franceschini. Manuscript dedication on 3 leaves (presumably replacing a printed dedication) inserted. Contemporary Florentine red morocco, wide border on sides composed of drawer handles, acorns, and palmettes, tool of a human face at corners, flat spine gilt, yellow gold-printed endpapers, gilt edges. Provenance: Thomas Osborn, 4th Duke of Leeds (presentation inscription from the author); Arthur F. Hill (bookplate dated 1905).

THE DEDICATION COPY WITH DEDICATION LEAF AND 3 PAGE EPISTLE IN THE HAND OF THE AUTHOR inscribed to Thomas, 4th Duke of Leeds (1713-1789). In the epistle Crudeli pays tribute to the Duke's appreciation of the fine arts and alludes to his admiration of Farinelli: 'Tanto più, che l'insigne Cantore, che n'è il soggetto, riconoscendo in Voi uno de'suoi non volgari ammiratori'. This would appear to be no mere flattery as a letter, dated 1930, pasted in at the beginning of the book informs Arthur Hill that a portrait of Farinelli was still in the possession of the 11th duke. Carlo Broschi (1705-1782) was probably the most famous castrato of all time. Fêted throughout Europe and on intimate terms with several sovereigns, he lived for three years in England and almost thirty years in Spain before retiring to Bologna where he died.
