Collation: \Kp\ka10 a-u8 x8(-6, blank) y-z8 &8 A-N8 O6 (\Kp\ka1r title, \Kp\ka1v-10 preliminary matter, a1r title to Inferno, a2r Inferno, r7v woodcut to Purgatorio, r8r Purgatory, D8v woodcut to Paradiso, E1r Paradiso, O5r colophon, O6r register). 298 leaves (of 311, lacking first quire, a1, G6 (G3 is substituted in duplicate) and O6). 60-61 lines of commentary surround and headline. Type: 6:130Ga, 3:108R, 4:84R (quires a-D), 9:81R (quires \Kp\ka, E-end). Two (of 3) full-page woodcuts, four-part border opening Inferno, column-width woodcut opening each canto, woodcut outline initials, initial spaces with guide-letters. Title added in early 19th-century amateur facsimile. (Neat tears into text in 2 leaves, some dampstaining, heavier at end, occasional light soiling or browning, small wormholes in final quire, one penetrating to quire G, N1 partly detached.) Early 19th-century blindstamped vellum with large central arabesque, modern black leather spine label, red edges (light stains, small splits). Provenance: 'Luigi Naples 1810'.

Fifth illustrated edition of Dante, the third with a full cycle of illustrations, re-using the woodcuts -- now attributed to the Master of the Pico Pliny (see lot 254 for an example of this artist's illumination) -- designed for Benalius and Capcasa's 1491 edition.
