Collation: [12 2-410 510(9+1) 6-1210 136 1410(6+1) 15-1610 176] (1/1r blank, 1/1v table, 2/1r Die neue Ehe, 14/1r Liber de gestis, 17/6 blank). 151 leaves (of 156, lacking 17/2-6), made up from at least 2 copies, the second copy cut close and remargined (fos. 8/2, 9/10, 10/1, 13/2-6 and quires 14-16, 17/1) and with traces of colour of woodcuts. 38 lines (variable). Type: 1:103G. Large woodcut Maiblumen initial, smaller woodcut outline initials, and 75 woodcuts; initial spaces, some with guide-letter. (Washed and pressed, marginal stains in about 8 leaves, discreet repaired tears in several leaves.) Early 20th-century maroon crushed morocco janseniste, gilt edges, by Rivière & Son. FIRST EDITION of both texts. The first part is a reworking of tales from the New Testament, derived in part from the world chronicle of Heinrich von München. It was a popular religious manual which contributed to the dissemination of the New Testament in the vernacular. The second text is a history of the three Magi: Melchior, Balthasar and Caspar. It places the legends of the Three Kings against a real historical and geographical background, and may have been written in 1364 on the occasion of the bicentennial of the translation of the remains of the Three Kings from Milan to Cologne by Barbarossa in 1164.
