HORATIUS FLACCUS, Quintus (65-8 B.C.). Opera. London: John Pine, 1733-1737.

8° (224 x 128mm). Engraved throughout by John Pine, with frontispieces, title vignettes, head and tail-pieces, and 4-line opening initial to each poem. (Frontispiece to vol. II with small stain at margin, 2M2 of the same vol. soiled at foot, occasional light soiling elsewhere, final index leaves slightly affected by damp.) Contemporary gilt-panelled Dutch red morocco, covers with a strapwork and floral design enclosed by ruled and roll-tool borders with a black ribbon, gilt spines with green leather lettering-pieces, marbled endpapers, gilt and dotted edges (upper cover of vol. II slightly affected by damp, corners and board edges worn, other extremities rubbed). Provenance: William van Citters (signed half-page Latin inscription, dated Middelburg 4 March 1755, at front of vol. I, with the name Arnold [van Citters] super-added).

Second issue with 'Potest' correctly engraved around the Caesar medal on p. 108 of volume II. Brunet III, 320: 'remarquable par l'élégance des ornements, et la correction en est plus exacte qu'on ne le croit généralement'; Rothschild 1547. (2)
