GRANT, James (1802-1879). Sketches in London. London: Bradbury and Evans for W.S. Orr & Co., 1838.
8° (225 x 135mm). Etched frontispiece, additional title, and 22 plates by and after 'Phiz' [i.e. Hablot Knight Browne] and others, woodcut illustration. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with 4 original pencil, pen and watercolour drawings by Browne, signed in pencil 'Phiz'. (Some text leaves and plates lightly browned.) 20th-century crushed blue morocco gilt by Riviere & Son, the covers with triple gilt fillet borders, the spine gilt in 6 compartments, titled in 2 and dated at the foot, the other compartments elaborately decorated, roll-tooled gilt turn ins, top edge gilt, original gilt- and blind-stamped cloth covers and spine laid down and bound in at the end, gilt blue morocco-covered box by Riviere and Son (original cloth covers lightly worn).
FIRST EDITION. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH 4 ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR DRAWINGS BY 'PHIZ'. These drawings, for one of Browne's earliest commissions, comprise the original drawings for the plates opposite pages 129 ('A Scene in the House') and 133 ('O'Connell taking the Oaths'), and 2 other drawings, possibly unused originals. In the 'Preface', Grant predicts of the 23-year old Browne that, 'With regard to the Illustrations by ''Phiz,'' which embellish the volume, the Author can speak more unreservedly than he could do of the letter-press. They are among the happiest achievements of the genius of one who, though but young in years, is unquestionably, in this particular style of engraving, the first artist of the day' (p.[iii]).
