Lot Essay

Although a native wood to Great Britain, furniture made of burr-yew is relatively scarce. It has been suggested that yew was used particularly for furniture of unusual design and of the highest quality. Another George III burr-yew bachelor's chest, of similarly retarded date, purchased by Miss J. Gaunt from Charles Lumb & Sons, Ltd, Harrogate at the 8th Antique Dealer's Fair, Grosvenor House, June 1948 for £495 was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 14 November 1996, (£62,000).
