The rectangular padded back, arms and seat covered in close-nailed buttoned brown leather, with spirally-turned arm supports and ring-turned front legs with brass caps and ceramic castors, the back-swept rear legs with brass castors, the back castors stamped "Lewtys Patent", below a crown, the back right leg stamped "Strahan & Co. 27440", the upholstery distressed, the seat springing damaged

Lot Essay

A pattern for a related Gothic or Elizabethan library chair featured in Lorenzo Booth's Exhibition Book of Original Designs for Furniture, 1864 (E. T. Joy, Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design, p. 161). Robert Strahan & Co. 'Manufacturers, Auctioneers and Valuators', were listed at 24 Henry Street, Dublin in the 1860s and were exhibitors at the 1864 Dublin Exhibition.
