Lot Essay

These gently shaped and chamfered brass plates and handles which accord with the marbled-walnut veneer of the drawer-fronts are typical of early Georgian design and can be seen on an early 18th Century walnut bookcase, noted to have its original handles, exhibited by H.C. Baxter & Sons, Somerset House Art Treasures Exhibition, London, 1979 p. 75. A slightly more elaborate version can be seen in N. Goodison, 'The Victoria and Albert Museum's Collection of Metal-Work Pattern Books', Furniture History Society Jounal, Leeds, 1975, p. 26 and pl. 1, as well as lot 271.
