This is a fragment of an early copy of a rare work. It is a further explanation of al-Muwatt'a by Malik b. Anas recorded by his student 'Abd al-Rahman b. al-Qasim al-'Utaqi (d. AH 191/806 AD), and further edited by his student Sahnun b. Sa'id al-Tanaukhi al-Himsi al-Qirwani (d. AH 240/854 AD).
The complete work runs to 16 parts each consisting of a number of books. The present folios constitute parts of the following books; Part I a book of ablutions, part VI a book on divorce, part VIII a book on the exchange of gold, silver and coins (complete), part X a book on attorneyship, part XI a book on resolving disputes, part XII a book on partnership and the position of Qazi, part XIII a book on evidence (almost complete), part XVI a book on punishment for fornication.

126 folios from a other parts of this work are preserved in the Princeton University Library, Yasuda collection and described as rare (Hitti, P.K.: Princeton University catalogue of MSS No. 1834).

At the end are some folios of a commentary entitled Kitab al-Muqaddimat by Abi al-Walid Muhammad b. Ahmad b. Rushd (d. AH 520/1126 AD). This commentary on al-Mudawwana was written by the grandfather of Averroes.
