GRINDLAY, Robert Melville (Captain).
Scenery, Costume and Architecture, chiefly on the westerrn side of India. London: R. Ackermann (parts I & II) or Smith, Elder & Co. (parts III-VI), [1826-]1830.
6 parts in two volumes, 2° (400 x 318mm). Engraved title to vol.I with hand-coloured stipple-engraved vignette, vol.II with lithographic title on india paper mounted, letterpress section title to part IV, advertisment leaf to part II and advertisment leaf to parts III and IV bound in. 36 FINE HAND-COLOURED AQUATINT PLATES, HEIGHTENED WITH VARNISH after Grindlay, William Westall and others by R.G. Reeve and others (10 plates with the hand-colouring attributed to J. Hogarth). (Bound without section titles to parts 2,3,5 and 6: not called for?) Contemporary russia, covers elaborately tooled in gilt and blind with a wide decorative border surrounding a central panel diced in blind, spines in six compartments with alternate double and single raised bands, lettered in the second compartment, volume number in the fifth, the others with ruled panels, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (rebacked, the majority of the original spines laid down, corners neatly repaired). Provenance: Joseph Grout (armorial bookplate, with later label noting name change to Joseph Grout Williams); Boies Penrose II (armorial bookplate).
FIRST EDITION, THE BOIES PENROSE COPY and an early apparently unrecorded intermediate issue: a fine clean large copy including some of the greatest early images of India and Ceylon.
Abbey notes that 'copies in the first and earliest form, with text bound from the part printing... usually preserve the five part titles to parts 2 to 6, together with one leaf of Advertisement each in Parts 2, 4 and 6 [sic. This is incorrect: adverts. are for parts 2, 3 & 4 (on 1 leaf) and 6]. Part copies can also be recognized by the fact that signatures C to E1 in Part I carry page numbers 3 to 12; pagination ceased with the appearance of the second part, and was removed from Part I when text was reprinted for copies issued in volume form'.
The present copy appears to have been issued in parts (it includes 3 leaves of advertisments and the part 4 title) but the leaves of the first part are not signed or paginated (a sign of a later issue in volume form). The presence of watermarks as early as 1825 to the part 1 text, the fine impressions of the plates and the other early issue indicators place this issue somewhere between the parts issue (as recorded by Abbey) and the work's first appearance in volume form.
