An Inlaid-Iron Hexagonal Box
Meiji Period (late 19th Century)
Designed on the lid with a large phoenix inlaid and finished in gilt, silver, copper and shakudo above a stand of paulownia, the stem engraved in the iron and the leaves and blossoms inlaid and patinated in shakudo, gilt, copper and silver, the surrounding clouds in low-relief with engraved-line details; the lid also with a gilded border of fretwork and with gilt and silver scrolling paulownia which is continued onto the lower sides of the box
