Lot Essay

A similar pair of slightly more squat proportions with plain frame edge and foot ring dated to the 17th century in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is illustrated by R.H. Ellsworth, Chinese Furniture, New York, 1970, pp. 194 and 259, cat. no. 101. Stools of this type of a later date, as with the present lot, are more upright and attenuated.
