An Indian ivory John Company chess set
Early 19th century
Possibly Berhampur, both sides mounted on bases carved with lotus petal motif, the one side stained, the opposing side natural, the royals seated as rajahs in howdahs mounted on elephants, the rooks as armed turrets mounted by sentries, the pawns on the one side represent the sepoy troops of the John Company armed with muskets, the opposing Indian side armed with spears
King -- 4¼in. (11cm.) high; pawn -- 3¼in. (8.3cm.) high

Similar sets were sold in these Rooms, 21 May 1986, lot 18 and a part set sold 27 September 1995, lot 152.
Victor Keats, The Illustrated Guide to World Chess Sets, Batsford Ltd 1985. Page 81, plate 2 illustrates the 'Clive of India' chess set, early 18th century, given to Lord Clive of India, carved in Bengal. The sentry figure on the John Company side was typically carved to represent the figure of John Bull.
