A SOUTH GERMAN ORMOLU-MOUNTED TULIPWOOD AND MARQUETRY ROLL-TOP DESK
Late 18th Century
Ribbon-banded overall in ebony and fruitwood, the rectangular quarter-veneered top above a sloping frieze and a roll-top with a conforming panel centered by a medallion with a musical trophy, enclosing a green baize-lined writing-slide and a fitted interior with a recess above a drawer flanked by two simulated drawers at either side sliding sideways and concealing a plain compartment, above three simulated short drawers, the lower section with a central drawer above a kneehole flanked by two short drawers on either side, the panelled angles above panelled square tapering legs terminating in brass caps, the back inscribed in black chalk 'A703' and 'A1146', probably upper Rhine region

Lot Essay

This roll-top desk belongs to a of a group of furniture from the upper Rhine region and relates closely to the roll-top desk from Strassburg of circa 1780/86 in Schloss Favorite, near Rastatt, which shares the distinctive shape and closely related musical trophy in a circular medallion (G. Himmelheber, Die Kunst des deutschen Möbels, Munich, 1973, vol. III, fig. 171).
