Lot Essay

This model forms part of a group of candelabra with candle-arms terminating in rams' heads or têtes de belier, the designs of which are firmly attributed to André-Charles Boulle (1642-1732). The design proved to be very popular well into the 19th Century and a number of 18th and 19th Century versions survive. A candelabra of identical design is illustrated in H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel, et. al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, p. 57, fig. 1.7.3, while a pair of undated candelabra of this model was sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 26 April 1994, lot 159.
