Representing a shooting star, the sleeping nymph naked and with a star in her long flowing hair, flying across a night sky, on cloud-cast base inscribed F. Charpentier and with foundry stamp COLIN & CIE/PARIS; on fleur de pêche shaped and stepped marble plinth, plinth restored

Lot Essay

Born in Vaucluse, Félix Charpentier (d. 1924) was a pupil of Cavelier at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He worked on the façade of the Grand Palais, contributing a group entitled L'Art contemporain, as well as two bas-reliefs for the Gare du Lyons, La Navigation and Le Vapeur. Executed in 1905, the present work, L'Etoile Filante was cast in gilt bronze by E. Colin & Cie. and was illustrated in the latter's catalogue until 1924.
