Lot Essay

The prototype, on panel, 47.5 x 33.5 cm, has been in the Rijksmuseum, on loan from the Mauritshuis, The Hague, since 1948 (P.J.J. van Thiel, et.al., All the Paintings of the Rijskmuseum, 1976, p.444, no.C1367, ill.). It was posthumously painted as a pendant to the portrait of the sitter's famous son, the architect and sculptor Giuliano da San Gallo (1445-1516). This pendant is now also in the Rijksmuseum (P.J.J. van Thiel, op. cit., p.444, no.C1368, ill.).
