Lot Essay

The prototype of the first exists in several versions. D.S. Pepper, Guido Reni, 1984, p.304, no.C6, lists five versions: in the Hermitage, the Uffizi, the Alte Pinakothek Munich, the Gemäldegalerie Stuttgart and the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica, Rome. Pepper believes that none of these versions is by Reni, and he doubts that their source is a lost painting by Reni. He attributes the Hermitage version to Elisabetta Sirani.
The prototype of the second, dated 1512, oil on panel, 68 x 45 cm, has been in the Uffizi since 1589, inv. no.1443 (Gli Uffizi, Catalogo Generale, 1979, p.516, no.P1593, ill.).
