Lot Essay
The prototype of circa 1555, oil on canvas, 102 x 82 cm, has been in the Gemäldegalerie der Staatlichen Museen, Berlin since 1832 (H.E. Wethey, The Paintings of Titian, 1971, II, p.115, no.60, plate 191). The sitter has been traditionally identified as Titian's daughter Lavinia, by comparison with a portrait claimed to depict Lavinia as a bride (Wethey, op. cit., no.59).
