Lot Essay

For the attribution compare the signed picture of the Battle of ter Heyde, which was with D.A. Hoogendijk, Amsterdam, in 1951 and another signed picture, possibly of the Battle at Barfleur 1692, sold at Sotheby's London, 16 December 1981, lot 52, ill.
The battle has tentatively been identified by Dr. R.B. Prud'homme van Reine of the Scheepvaart Museum, Amsterdam, as the battle in the Sont in 1658. In this battle between the Dutch and the Swedish fleets, Lieutenant Admiral Jacob van Wassenaar Obdam and Vice-Admiral Witte de With defeated the Swedish fleet under Admiral Wrangel.
