Lot Essay

The Oudezijds Heerenlogement was built by Philips Vingboons in 1647 and became one of the most prestigious inns in Amsterdam. Among the famous guests known to have stayed there are Amalia van Solms (in 1655), Stadtholder William III (in 1672) and Tsar Peter the Great of Russia (in 1697/8). The building also served as an auction house, the sales being held in the inner courtyard. In 1876 the building was destroyed and the entrance gate was moved to Keizersgracht 365, where it still is today (see A.E. d'Ailly, Historische Gids van Amsterdam, ed. 1963, pp.124/5). In the present picture, the gate in the background is the entrance to the Sint Pieters gasthuis.
