A Cased 14-Bore Percussion Sporting Gun For 'Imperial' Caps

With browned two-stage twist barrel with silver fore-sight, octagonal breech section changing to sixteen-sided and signed in full on the top flat, case-hardened patent breech engraved 'Smith's Patent' within a platinum-inlaid rectangle and with platinum plug, case-hardened scroll engraved tang, signed case-hardened rounded scroll engraved lock, finely figured walnut half-stock (slight bruising), chequered grip, scroll engraved blued iron mounts, silver escutcheon and fore-end cap, original brass-mounted ramrod, and some original finish: in original lined and fitted oak case with accessories including Hawksley leather-covered powder-flask, the lid (scratched) with trade label for circa 1830-45 and flush-fitting carrying handle with circular escutcheon, London proof marks

Lot Essay

A typewritten note (of 1979) signed by the late owner and sold with this lot reads: 'Purchased from D. Donald about 1960. This gun was made for J.G. Heathcote, Esq., his name is on the case label and also the bag of wads...'

This gun incorporates British Patent No. 5978 of August 7 1830 for 'Smith's Patent Imperial Cap'
