This early English fowling-piece is of similar size and finish to the gun in the portrait of Captain Sir Thomas Southwell (circa 1630) now in the Royal Armouries, Leeds (see illustration)
When acquired by the late owner (prior to 1938) this gun 'was still upon the active list, being employed as a bird scarer by a farmer who had a high opinion of its powers, and who affirmed that he had, upon occasion, brought down as many as forty rooks with a single shot from the old gun' (George, op. cit., p. 34)
