Lot Essay

The Sèvres archive retains a drawing dated 19 February 1753 that corresponds to the present form, describing it as an accompanyment to both a gobelet 'à cuvier' and a gobelet 'à cerceau.'
According to David Peters, the painter's mark of a block-like F located at a distance from the factory mark such as that on the present example is found on pieces dated 1754-1758 and decorated with flowers, figures and trophies. Cf. David Peters, Decorator and Date Marks on C18 Vincennes and Sèvres Porcelain, privately printed, 1997, pp. 34, 81.
