Lot Essay

Inigo Jones, the English architect, was born in London in 1573. He founded classical English architecture and introduced Palladian style into England. His commissions included the Queen's House at Greenwich, the rebuilding of the Banqueting Hall at Whitehall, Marlborough Chapel, and others. He laid out Covent Garden and Lincoln's Inn Fields. He died in 1652.
