ORIGINAL DRAWINGS AND PROOF PLATES for Naturgetreu Darstellung aller inn- und ausländischen Material-Samen und getrockneten Früchte, wie sie gewöhnlich im Handel vorkommen. Nuremberg: J.S. Winterschmidt, junior, 1818. 8° (266 x 208). 41 original drawings in body colour, black chalk and ink on paper, depicting seeds and stones of various fruit and vegetables, of which 35 were used for the final publication (containing 38 plates) and 6 which were not ultimately used, and 34 hand-coloured proof plates, including 11 in duplicate, most drawings and plates with plant name identifications added in contemporary manuscript, a few plates with letters, occasional manuscript note on colour or size. (3 plates are not represented by a drawing and 15 plates are not represented by a proof, occasional light soiling.) Early 20th-century vellum-backed embossed paper boards, flat spines, leather spine labels, red edges, bound by Karl Dettinger, court bookbinder at Stuttgart, with his stamp. Provenance: Nuremberg, Winterschmidt family, publishers (part of their archive which included lots 65, and 79, and see lot 70, Christie's, 22 March 2000).

A near complete set of beautifully coloured original drawings and proof plates for Winterschmidt's detailed illustrations of 198 types of seed and dried fruit, drawn from nature and often depicted from a variety of perspectives to aid identification. The published work contained 38 finished plates; the present volume contains the original drawings for 35 of them, plus 6 unpublished drawings, and 23 (plus duplicates) proof plates. Johann Samuel Winterschmidt was not only a prominent member of the Nuremberg family of publishers and engravers, from whose archives this volume comes, but he was also a keen botanist, recognised for his work in the service of that field as an honorary member of the Royal Botanical Society at Regensburg.
