Winterschmidt, 1819-22. 4° (231 x 190mm). 165 engraved plates, all but 5 with contemporary hand-colouring, comprising all 100 plates in the Nürnbergische Flora, 64 proof plates labelled 'Müster', of which 23 are in duplicate and 15 in triplicate, 12 plates for vol. Provenance: Nuremberg, Winterschmidt family.

A complete set of hand-coloured plates with duplicate proof plates illustrating Winterschmidt's Nürnbergische Flora, formerly part of the publisher's own archive. The Winterschmidts, engravers as well as printers and publishers, devoted extraordinary care to the production and colouring of plates issued with their works, often describing them as 'illuminated'. The present volume contains a set of plates and proofs undoubtedly prepared as a model for colourists to ensure a high standard of accuracy. The printed volume of this work is rare; Stafleu and Cowan were unable to examine a copy. Nissen BBI 2170; Stafleu and Cowan 18030.
