DALTON, Frank. d. 1892. U.S. Marshal
Document signed ("Frank Dalton"), Fort Smith, Arkansas, on or about May 2, 1887. 1 page elephant folio (16 x 21 in.) with a second sheet (16 x 7 in.) bearing signatures, pasted down to the first. The Tableau is entitled "Abstract of Compensation to Witnesses," and lists the amounts of individual compensation. We learn that Frank Dalton of Fort Smith is to earn $3 for his two days of service. The document bears the signatures of 14 other witnesses, and is signed twice by a U.S. Marshall. Frank Dalton was the sole straight arrow in the family, pursuing a career as he did as a deputy U.S. Marshal under Judge Isaac Parker at Fort Smith. But he met a hasty end, shot down by a trio of Whiskey smugglers. His younger brothers promptly pinned on deputy Marshal's badges, but Bob Dalton was soon fired for taking a bribe, and Emmett and Grat also resigned amid rumors they were rustling cattle on the side.
Provenance: Ronald J. Atlas Collection.
