Details
DALTON, Robert Reddick. (1868-1892)
Legendary outlaw leader of the Dalton gang.
Document signed and annotated ("Bob Dalton Ft Smith Ark"), partly printed and accomplished in manuscript, 'Western District of Arkansas', 25 May, 1887. 1 page 8 1/2 x 3 1/2 in., punched at upper left with paper loss at upper right and a small tear partially affecting one word of manuscript, but not affecting the very strong and extremely rare signature of legendary outlaw Bob Dalton. Dalton was cut down at the age of 24 and his gang decimated in a failed attempt on two banks in the town of Coffeyville, Kansas. So ended a two year reign of terror by the brothers Bob, Emmett, Gratton, and their accomplises (at Coffeyville) Dick Broadwell, and Bill Powers. Bob Dalton in the company of his older brother, signs as an officer of the law. In whole: "I hereby certify that I have been employed and have acted 24 days as a Guard over Chas Blue Eagle, a United States prisoner in charge of Frank Dalton Deputy Marshal, from near Coffeyville to Muscogge (?) being a distance of 120 miles. Bob Dalton P.O. Address Ft Smith, Ark". Dead at 24, so rare is Dalton in autograph that this will be the first and, for now, the only example recorded by American Book Prices Current.
Provenance: Ronald J. Atlas collection.
