Lot Essay

Lu Chen was born in 1935 in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. He graduated from the Chinese Paintings Department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1958, and subsequently took up a teaching position at his alma mater. Contemporary Western Art became his major topic of study in the 1980's. Through his academic works he advocates the modernization of traditional Chinese painting. In 1987, he was invited by the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris to give lectures, and later he visited several other European countries. Back in China, Lu became a member of the Chinese Artists' Association and the Oriental Art Association. His work Contest Beyond the Great Wall won an award at the National Olympic Exhibition of Fine Art in China. Currently he is a professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts.
