Lot Essay
Born in 1925, native of Li County, Hebei Province, Huang Zhou was originally called Liang Huangzhou. At an early age, he became an apprentice of the landscape painter Zhao Wangyun. In 1948, Huang joined the army and there was responsible for art work. During this period he travelled to Xinjiang, Qinghai and Xizang, where he was influenced strongly by the life styles of the minorities. His works have been exibited widely and he has won many awards at home and abroad. His work Wind and Snow in the Wilderness received a Golden Award at the 1956 International Youth Festival. In 1977, he was infected with a disease of the backbone, which, unfortunately, required a very long time to heal. He is now General Affairs Executive of the Chinese Artists' Association and Vice President of the Chinese Painting Research Institute.
