Lot Essay

Rear-Admiral George Tobin sailed to India and China in an East India Company ship in 1788-1790. It is possible that the Daniells could have met Tobin in India. In 1791 Tobin joined the Providence under Captain William Bligh who was making a second expedition to the South Seas to obtain breadfruit. The official artist appointed to the expedition fell ill before the trip, leaving Tobin, a keen amateur naturalist and sketcher, as the major visual recorder of the voyage. His journal and drawings are now in the Mitchell Library, Sydney. For more information, see The Dictionary of Australian Artists, ed. Joan Kerr, 1992. Tobin is reputed to have had a fine collection of Old Master paintings.
