Lot Essay
The Daniells visited Salsette with the artist James Wales before leaving India in 1794. Salsette was originally an island separated by a narrow channel from Bombay. The two are now joined and the name Salsette is not generally used. It is one of a number of sites in the area with important Buddhist rock-cut temples. The site was occupied between the first and eleventh centuries. Dr. Maurice Shellim has suggested that the picture was worked up while the Daniells were in Bombay.
