This album appears to have been made by a member of the Governor-General Lord William Bentinck's party which met with Maharaja Ranjit Singh of the Punjab at Rupal in 1831. En route the artist passed through Delhi and met Col. Skinner and his family. Colonel James Skinner, C.B., or Sikander Sahib (1778-1841), retains an unchallenged place in Indian military history. An Anglo-Indian son of a Scotsman and an Indian woman of the Rajput (warrior) caste, Skinner was debarred from military service following a prohibitory decree by the East India Company in 1792. Eventually he founded his own regiment, called 'Skinner's Horse', a strong cavalry force, and served with distinction in campaigns against the Sikhs. A Delhi School Portrait of Colonel James Skinner was sold at Christie's London, 5 June 1996, lot 25, (£7,130).
