Lot Essay

Lieutenant W.L.D. Smith served with the 29th Regiment of the British Army. This view of Gujrat was drawn shortly after the end of the second Sikh war which came to a close there in February 1849. Gujrat is situated in the Punjab region of Pakistan, about 75 miles north of Lahore. The old Fort of Gujrat was reputedly built during the reign of Akbar, who also built the Red Fort in Agra. Akbar moved his capital from Agra to Lahore in 1585, but returned to Agra in 1599 where he died in 1605.
