Lot Essay

Hodgson's collections of 84 reptiles, amphibians and fish, together with 55 drawings, were presented to the British Museum in 1858 when he left the Indian subcontinent for good. Of the 28 species of reptile, four of the snakes and three of the five species of amphibian were species new to science.
